Sunday 13th March had the U16 girls B team at Harrogate for games against the Harrogate B and C teams and the Leeds A team. Playing first against Harrogate B the team were quickly into the attack and for most of the game were in the Harrogate half. Many strikes on goal tested the Harrogate keeper who seemed be the target we were aiming at! Eventually Thirsk broke through with a stunning strike by Annabel to put them 1-0 up. Despite many other attempts by Marianne, Romey and Elise, the game ended with only the one goal. One game off for refreshments and some ideas from the coach, and back on again against Harrogate C. This went very much as the first game with most of the activity based in the Harrogate half, but still a goal seemed hard to find. And again as in the first game a goal eventually arrived with a narrow angle strike by Romey. The defence had a little more to do this time and Emily in goal had a few well taken saves to keep the score to our advantage. So a second 1-0 win. Another game off and then the final match against Leeds who had seemed the stronger of the other teams there. This was more even so the mid-field of Elise, Corde, Maddie and Amelia were very much in action. There were a few short corners to defend with Claire, Bethany, Hester and Freddie making sure there was no goal conceded. Unfortunately in the end an open play goal was scored by Leeds with 5 minutes to go. Then it became a Thirsk game with shots peppering the Leeds area but none made it over the line; some just hitting a post, but no consolation for all the time spent attacking. The game ending 1-0 to Leeds. Well done to the team for a strong and spirited effort, two good wins and one unfortunate loss. At least we had a few games to end the season and the weather was even pleasantly warm. Thanks to Andrew for umpiring, made the coaches job so much easier. And for the parents driving and supporting vocally from the side line.
