Speed queen Sophie Lake earned herself the next two goals.- Jade Beckwith
With promotion fixed firmly in their sights Thirsk knew that the result of this game was pivotal in making that dream a reality. Hallam started the match by showing gumption and meeting Thirsk head on. After 15 minutes of play both teams were at loggerheads after both sides failed to convert from penalty corners. Hallam earned the first goal on the days score-sheet from a well-placed strike from the top of Thirsk’s D. Not a team to be caught suffering in silence, Thirsk responded in kind two minutes later from a rocketing aerial strike converted by skipper Spanner Rogers into the back of Hallam’s net. Thirsk duo Ameila Borchard and Ella Durkin worked their socks off in midfield until halftime keeping Hallam’s forwards at bay. The first half whistle sounded with the score still at one goal a piece.
After a stirring half time team talk Thirsk knew they really had to up the ante in the second half to ensure that the match ended in a victory. As was similar in the first half, Thirsk kept the majority of the possession for first 20 minutes. Swift passing between Bea Bell, Megan Allen and Kathryn Barrett were unlucky not to result in a goal.
Once again Hallam managed to score first during the second half, applying the pressure to Thirsk at just the right time. Faced with the prospect of possibly losing the game Thirsk roused themselves from their day dream and started to play like the slick and dangerous unit that they’ve proved themselves to be throughout the season. Speed queen Sophie Lake earned herself the next two goals of the game making the score 3-2 in Thirsk’s favour. With 10 minutes left to be played the cracks started to appear in the tiring Hallam side and Olivia Smerdon sealed their fate by bagging Thirsk’s fourth and final goal of the game. Thirsk ended the match with a well deserved 4-2 victory. Player of the match was awarded to Amelia Borchard for her tireless efforts throughout the game in midfield. Special thanks is due to keeper Emily Hamby who had an excellent game in goal. Tart was awarded to Hannah Rogers for mistaking thin air for a seat, and providing the oppositions spectators with some quality entertainment!
