Thirsk finish the league campaign with 3rd place overall.

Thirsk U14 Girls A team played the final YYHL matches on a very wet and cold afternoon in York. The opening game was with York, and the Thirsk girls were quite hit and miss in this game. They did get an early chance, seeing the York goalie make a fine double save, as Olivia Borchard could not find the corner with her rebound shot. But most of the time we were under pressure, as a lack of awareness, and movement off the ball meaning it was difficult to get the passing game going. Twice Thirsk in defence were guilty of allowing the York players to be first to the ball, and both times it resulted in York goals, so a 2-0 defeat to start the day.
It did not get much better in the opening 5 minutes of the game with Wakefield, as again hesitation and then poor tackling allowed Wakefield to score, with Olivia Barber having no chance in goal. However within minutes Thirsk equalized with a right side attack, Millie Smith and Fern Watson combining, and a thunderous cross met by Sadie Bosomworth, who despite the attention of two defenders managed to sneak the ball in at the back post. This goal seemed to fire up the Thirsk girls at last, and Thirsk then dominated most of the remaining minutes. Olivia Borchard saw an effort hit the post, Tabby Cockerill fire over the cross bar, and the Wakefield goal keeper saved efforts from Fern, and Amy Flintoff. But despite the better display, a 1-1 draw was the result.
The final game was with Sheffield, and Thirsk continued with their energized game. Molly Disbury and Alexa Westgarth were assured in defence, and Holly Riddell, Penny Baker and Tilly Hall all helping to dominate midfield. It wasn’t long before Thirsk took the lead, with Amy latching onto a cross after great work from Tabby, Millie and Fern. Thirsk really should have capitalized on their many attacks, particularly down the right with Millie and Fern both sending in some fine balls. Sheffield did force Olivia into fine saves twice, but Thirsk deserved the 1-0 win.
So Thirsk finish the league campaign with 3rd place overall, so a great effort, though I know the girls will feel that they could and should have done better. There will be one last chance at the Yorkshire playoffs at the end of April to get one over all our Yorkshire rivals.
